In ancient Greece, ekphrasis meant describing anything in vivid detail. It has come to mean writing in response to a work of art. In this workshop we will choose several of the exhibition pieces to use as prompts for writing. No experience necessary – just come prepared to observe and react!

The event is free, but advance registration is requested. All health and safety protocols will be followed; see our Visit page for details.”

1/4 — Westport Book Shop Welcomes Diane Meyer Lowman as January Art Exhibitor

Westport, CT,  January 4, 2022  The Westport Book Shop is pleased to welcome literary and visual artist Diane Meyer Lowman as its guest exhibitor for the month of January, at the Book Shop’s Drew Friedman Art Place.  Diane’s art exhibit includes nine original haiku poems, each superimposed on a photograph taken by Diane, mostly in Westport or nearby.

Says Diane, “I love both the simplicity and complexity of the haiku form.  They’ve become a daily ritual for me, like journaling.  Both the photographs and my state of mind inspire and influence them.”

Westport Book Shop, a nonprofit used book store, is downtown Westport’s only source for used and antiquarian books, vintage vinyl records, and other media.  It is located at 23 Jesup Road, right across Jesup Green from the Westport Library.  The art exhibit is open to the public during the Book Shop’s business hours:  Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays from Noon to 5 p.m. (closed Mondays).  Diane Meyer Lowman’s work will be on exhibit through January 31, 2022.

The Book Shop’s “Drew Friedman Art Place” is an area of the store dedicated to exhibiting the work of community artists year-round, on a rotating basis.  Miggs Burroughs, a Trustee of the Drew Friedman Community Arts Center, and a founding member of The Artists Collective of Westport, is curating these exhibits, which change monthly.

12/10 — Town Poet Laureate Diane Lowman on The History of Everyday Poetry in Westport

It seems that while no wildly famous poets have made Westport their permanent home, many of their words have alighted here through our many poetry-loving residents. Moreover, many of them have created their own “words, words, words” (Hamlet, II.ii) of their own which, while may not have reached the audience of a Dickenson or Whitman, nonetheless imbue our little hamlet with the spirit of poetry.
